The best way to gain a solid understanding of the world—and to build both linguistic and intercultural competence—is to study abroad. Join us for a four-week Spring Term course or a full semester. You will be immersed in the culture, living with host families or local students and taking classes taught by local professors. The Modern Languages and Cultures faculty recommends that all majors and minors participate in a study-abroad program. To help you do that, we offer two options: Spring Term and Semester.
Spring Term
The Spanish Program offers a May Term course (SPA 229) that alternates between two Spain-based experiences.
Even years: Off-Campus Conversation in Spain (Madrid and southern Spain).
Live with a host family or in a dorm in Madrid, visit key cities in central Spain (Segovia and Toledo), and spend a week traveling through southern Spain, visiting Granada, Seville, Córdoba, or Málaga—including time at the beach.
Odd years: Conversation on the Camino.
Walk 100 miles of the famous pilgrimage route, the Camino de Santiago, then spend two weeks with host families in Santiago de Compostela, taking daily Spanish classes and exploring the beautiful landscapes of northwestern Spain. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Students may receive credit for this course twice and can complete both options.
Hanover scholarships are available for these courses.
Semester
For semester-long study abroad, we offer several opportunities:
Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), Ciudad Real, Spain
Study alongside Spanish students, take classes in Spanish, and spend six months fully immersed in the culture.
USAC: Costa Rica and Chile
Spend approximately three months studying with classes available in Spanish and in English.
