STUDY
ABROAD OPPORTUNITIES
FOR SPANISH MAJORS/MINORS
The Spanish faculty recommends that all Spanish majors and
minors participate in a study abroad program and to help you
do that we offer two different types of Study Abroad opportunities.
Spring
Term Study Abroad
Spanish
227 goes alternately to Latin America and Spain and students
may receive credit twice for this course. You may elect to
go on
these trips after having taken Spanish 218. The trip to
Mexico goes
to Merida in the Yucatan peninsula where you will
live with a
Mexican family and have opportunities to see the area
and
visit several of the famous Mayan ruins. In Alcalá
de Henares, Spain, you will also live with a family, visit
important sites in central Spain and then spend a week traveling
throughout southern Spain. In Ecuador students live with families in Quito and travel to Guayaquil and Cuenca to experience four different regions: coast, jungle, mountains and Galapagos
Watch for an announcement about these courses at the end of
the Winter Term. There will be a meeting with the professor
who will lead the group and then you will be informed about
the estimated cost and will be given other information about
the trip. Scholarships through Hanover College, based on need
and merit, are available for spring term programs.

Hanover students in the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, recently declared one of the "seven wonders" in the world.

Semester
Study Abroad
There
are two options for a semester-long study abroad in Spanish.
Each allows Hanover students to spend an academic semester
off-
campus taking courses which can be counted toward a Hanover
College degree. You may apply four credits from study abroad
toward
your major in Spanish or two credits toward the minor.
Students who participate in either of these programs will
be taking regular university courses with Spanish or Mexican
students. Students interested in participating in a semester
program must take the oral interview administered by the Spanish
faculty to determine that their level of Spanish is sufficient.
Students must have excellent Spanish language skills, a 3.0
cumulative GPA and 3.0 GPA in Spanish courses, and approval
of the Spanish faculty. Participants in these programs pay
regular Hanover tuition, room and board fees, and receive
100% of their scholarship money/financial aid (with the exception of some performance based scholarships in music and theater) in addition
to a $500 travel scholarship. Semester study abroad programs
in Latin America and Spain are administered are administered by the Haq Center in conjunction with the Spanish faculty. Specific information about off campus study is available in the Haq center. Please contact Dr. Uschi Appelt at appelt@hanover.edu
The
Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha-UCLM - Ciudad Real,
Spain. Located in a small city approximately 125 miles
south
of Madrid, the UCLM is a new addition to a multi-campus system
established in 1985. Ciudad Real itself is a city relatively
untouched
by American influence and offers a unique environment that
will
allow Hanover students to experience life in a typically Spanish
community. Students who participate in this exchange program
take
courses taught in Spanish, and it is particularly appropriate
for Spanish language majors. Participants must have excellent
Spanish language skills and be approved by the Spanish faculty.
A
minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required. You can study the
UCLM website at http://www.uclm.es. Contact Drs. Dollmeyer at dollmeyr@hanover.edu or Reyes at reyes@hanover.edu if you are interested.
The
Universidad del Valle Atemajac-UNIVA - Guadalajara, Mexico.
UNIVA is located in a large, vibrant city 300 miles west of
Mexico City. UNIVA is a relatively young, private university
with programs in business, communication [including radio/TV
and
journalism], computer science, Spanish, psychology and graphic
arts.
In addition, they have recently opened a department of humanities.
UNIVA is appropriate for Spanish majors as well as students
from other majors. Classes are taught in Spanish and students
live with Mexican
families. Participants must have excellent Spanish language
skills
and be approved by the Spanish faculty. A minimum cumulative
GPA of 3.0 is required. You can study the UCLM website at
http://www.univa.mx.Contact Dr. Santa Cruz at santacr@hanover.edu if you are interested
