All students must complete a two-semester sequence to satisfy the language requirement. No one can "place out" of the language requirement (although students who score a 4 or 5 in the Advanced Placement exam for their language may take only 1 course rather than 2 in that language to satisfy the requirement). Depending on a student's past experience with the language and the results of the placement exam, a student can satisfy the LADR with the following sequences: 115 and 116; 116 and 217; 217 and 218; 218 and one upper level course; or 2 upper level courses. Students with more than one year of high school foreign language experience and who wish to continue that same language at Hanover MUST take the placement exam administered by the Department of Modern Languages before enrolling in a language course. Students of French, German and Spanish can place into 115, 116, 217, 218 or above (2xx). Students of Spanish who have had three years or more of High School Spanish must start at 116 or above depending upon placement exam results.. Students who place into 218 or above 218 (2xx) must follow the sequences listed below, depending on their language of study.
